In July 2023, Aranya Friendship Bay, a "small-scale knowledge-based community" jointly developed by Aranya, Xuxu Huasheng and Friendship Wansui, officially opened. Friendship Bay is located on the north bank of Aranya in Beidaihe New District, Qinhuangdao, with a total area of ​​about 1.3 hm2 . The File Apartment, Friendship House Club Hotel and Dijiu Corridor jointly enclose a small tidal square, and the north side is public buildings such as the North Bank Auditorium and the North Bank Market. During the construction of Friendship Bay, local design agencies such as Gen Architecture, Vertical Architecture, and Zhizheng Architecture Studio were deeply involved and completed a series of work from space planning to architectural design. Unlike the previous isolated "cluster design" in China, the cooperation of architects this time has a clear purpose - to work together to create a "small-scale knowledge-based community" in the minds of investors. From the final effect, the Friendship Bay building complex has a good spatial scale, construction quality and community form, and the architects have completed the design commission well. But from an academic perspective, the construction of the Friendship Bay community also raises a series of questions. Social level: such as how to transform profit-driven large-scale real estate development; how to meet the housing needs of the emerging urban middle class; and how to coordinate community quality and social equity. Professional level: such as how architects can achieve spatial quality in the face of harsh design conditions; the relationship between "ideal community" and historicity and locality; and the physical and sensory characteristics of contemporary architecture. The seminar invited industry experts and practicing architects to participate in in-depth exchanges on the above issues. As a phenomenal real estate product, Aranya is in a historical stage where large-scale real estate development in China is receding and small boutique communities are in the ascendant. As long as the urbanization process continues, the discussion on ideal space will not end.

The design of the Aranya Friendship Bay project began in the summer of 2019. At that time, we did not expect that the project would last for 4 years. With the changes in the external environment in recent years, the owner's thinking has been constantly adjusted, making this project face many challenges and full of uncertainties. The resulting demand for flexibility also triggered our reflection on the relationship between architectural space types and usage methods.
