Designed in collaboration with Sydney-based YSG Studio, Bankston’s latest collection of architectural hardware launched in June at Copenhagen’s 3daysofdesign festival. Introducing a unique intersection between aesthetics, ergonomics and originality, the spirited ensemble highlights both Bankston’s and YSG’s passion for experimentations with natural materials, and their appreciation for handcrafted design.
Securing a premium corner retail space near the Amagertorv public square in the heart of Copenhagen, Bankston presented the Australian-made FSC-certified timber door levers, pulls and joinery pieces featuring striped patterns in alternating natural tones, complemented by a niche range cast in bronze. Over three days, the international design world including key media, retailers and fellow-designers descended on the utopian space designed by YSG, to share conversations and ideas. Creating a look and feel unlike customary design festival settings, walls coated in wheat-pasted posters celebrating the collection recalled promos for rock bands, adding a downtown edge. Display units clad in lilac and moss green carpet encouraged tactile interaction with all the pieces, while colourful striped rugs boldly vibrated the feature ‘streaks’ on the hardware.
Against a backdrop of tunes spun by DJ Christian D’or under a glowing copper moon, the space swung into a highly sociable place to hang-out in. Decked with an oversized custom snake beanbag, plus a lounge setting for those eager to settle in, return visits were a regular occurrence, enabling relaxed chats with YSG’s director Yasmine Ghoniem, and Bankston’s Steve and Emily Bradley and their team.
