LE TEMPLE Borobudur Implements Neo Vernacular Architecture Style to Provide An Unforgettable Guest Experience

There are many factors of consideration when it comes to designing hotels. Beyond providing the ultimate guest experience as home far-away-from-home, hotels have long become tourist attractions promoting the region where it is located. Hotel design means offering comfortable place to stay, while reflecting local culture through unique architecture. These considerations also lead to the architectural style applied in the hotel design.

Situated in Magelang Regency where the famous Borobudur Temple is located, LE TEMPLE Borobudur Hotel lives up to its name through the implementation of neo vernacular architecture style. The design combines local traditional values with modern style. Inspired by Buddhist temple principles and the magic of Borobudur, the philosophies of temple and stupa concept are adapted into modern hotel design.

The combination creates a specific geometrical composition using circles and stupas, depicting the silhouette of Mount Mahameru, a sacred mountain in Buddhist beliefs. The composition perfectly showcases symmetry of all elements as well as spatial hierarchy and alignment with the surrounding Buddhist temples. The layout consists of one large building and several smaller buildings that form a circle surrounding the large building, similar to the stupa at Borobudur Temple.

The large building houses the restaurant and function rooms. Reliefs of Buddha decorate both the facade and the interior, featuring an elongated shallow pool and a striking Buddha relief on the back wall. The wall to the left of the restaurant depicts the discovery of the Borobudur Temple. Half of the restaurant is surrounded by a semi-circular swimming pool and seven temple-shaped villas.

The second floor is dedicated to meeting rooms and multifunction rooms while the bar is on the third floor. The rooftop is the perfect place to watch the sunrise and the sunset, overlooking lush forest, hills, and mountains view.

The smaller buildings hold the villa-style hotel rooms. Respecting the shape of stupas, each villa is made as a two-storey building. The height of each level is designed not as high as the standard so the top floor becomes a mezzanine, staying true to the stupa concept.

Beside the philosophical design, local natural materials are used to complete the modern, luxurious hotel appearance. The main materials are asphalt shingles for roof and teak wood for window and door frames. The walls are made of prime stone and modified clay materials. The overall look of these materials are then complemented by plants and greenery scattered across the site.

As neo vernacular architecture style blends local heritage with modern design, LE TEMPLE Borobudur Hotel adopts Buddhist temple philosophy into the design of contemporary luxury villas. The hotel provides an authentic, unforgettable stay-in experience for the guests while at the same time paying a homage to its surroundings.
