Centuries of civilisation has brought forth an abundance of design inspiration that continues to shape present-day spaces. Even the cultural and religious heritage of old civilisation can be the source of design vision interpreted into contemporary interiors. In the island of Bali where Hindu religion is widely adhered, the design of Madawa Bali translates the stories from Mahabharata epic into a luxurious dining space.

Mahabharata is an ancient long poem that serves as a foundational text in Hinduism, narrating the power struggle for the throne of Hastinapura between two groups of royal cousins: the Pandavas and the Kauravas. The Madawa Bali recounts a tale of which the Pandavas face a fateful gamble against the Kauravas in the palace of Hastinapura with their wife Draupadi is at stake. This narrative closely mirrors the functional space created in the Madawa, housing a restaurant, bar, and night club where profound activities unfold much like the events in Hastinapura.

From the design stage to installation, the space is realised through a close collaboration between the architect and the local artists. Every inch of Madawa is handcrafted by an army of Balinese artisans, bringing a grandeur of dining venue to life.

The reimagining of characters and stories takes the guests on a journey of artistic exploration, blending modern interior with an ancient epic. What occured in Hastinapura is vividly presented through physical elements like Kamasan paintings, carvings, sculptures of Nandaka and Nandini, and a chandelier. The handcrafted chandelier made of dried banana trunk spirals down from the ceiling, capturing the infinite flow of Draupadi's garment when the Kauravas attempted to disrobe her. In the story, the conjured endless robe that salvaged the last fragments of Draupadi's dignity was a miracle from Krishna (Madawa), guardian of dharma and Vishnu incarnate in Hindu belief.
