Reimagining the Concept of Space: A Pet-Oriented Design
This project in Lam Tin, Hong Kong aims to redefine the concept of space through a pet-oriented design. The space is inhabited by a lady and her beloved pets. We prioritize flexibility as the design principle, while creating a serene and natural ambiance to achieve an optimal living environment for both the owner and her furry companions.
The existing layout of the house has been reconfigured to cater to owner’s needs. Three sliding panels have been installed to provide flexibility and divide the space into sections: the entrance and kitchen space, the living area, and the sleeping area.
Rather than assigning specific functions to each area, the design allows for adaptable use of the spaces. The entrance area serves not only as a welcoming area and open kitchen, but also a waiting and cleaning area for the energetic doggie. The middle and inner parts of the space are dedicated to the interaction between the homeowner and her cats. A panel is set to separate the pet-sit cat from the owner's cats. This reconfiguration results in a circular and seamless flow throughout the living space.
The glass panels allow natural light to permeate the space, fostering a sense of openness and spaciousness. We also incorporated a circle window to the panel of foyer, which not only allows sunlight in, but also adds geometrical chic to the space. To ensure pet-friendliness and ease of maintenance, materials such as plastic laminate and water-resistant cement paint have been selected.
Adjacent to the window, a dedicated area has been created for the owner and her pets. A platform was installed to encourage interaction between the pets and their owner. Additionally, a long table adjoining the window serves as a reading desk for the owner. This table also doubles as a playground for the feline friends. Thus, a harmonious space for both the human and furry inhabitants has been thoughtfully designed and realized.
